A Global Problem . . .

The 21st century, more than any of her predecessors, stands witness to change on a major scale. A constantly growing and resource hungry population has been aided by an industrial revolution - and this has seen fundamental changes in the way we interact not only with our own kind, but with our planet. Yet the great advances mankind has made stand in stark contrast to the tolls it has exacted upon its own home.

These advances have seen communities grow, infrastructure expand, the creation of multinational business conglomerates, rapid transcontinental travel and a revolution in production techniques that achieves greater output with less input. The future trends in E-commerce will shrink the commercial and financial barriers between us even further.

However these advances have not come without penalties - including a multiplicity of pollution problems, waste by-products and a drain on our natural and limited resources. Man has mined, processed and engineered the environment with little thought for the future. It is only now that we are making serious efforts to understand the effects our relationship with the planet creates.

As the century turns, responsible authorities at local, national and international levels are collectively aiming for zero organic material to land fill targets within the near future. Many Governments have chosen to either introduce or more effectively enforce existing legislation to encourage waste managers, handlers and generators to deal proactively with the issues surrounding the industry.

One of the greatest pollution issues facing the world, especially those nations in developing regions, is that of biosolids and sludge management. The numerous public health, pollution and odour issues surrounding it's management have made it one of the more difficult wastes to handle.

Australian company Vermitech have created a large scale commercially viable System for processing large volumes of biosolids and other organic wastes. These Systems convert the material into a high value organic fertiliser end product. The end product has proven to have considerable biological properties.
