Company Overview

  • Why Vermitech was formed
  • Established Plants
  • International Plans and Technology Rollout

Established in March 1997, Vermitech operates an environmental technology business offering a proven solution to the global problem of organic waste management.

The Vermitech System utilises proprietary vermiculture-based technology to recycle large volumes of organic waste into a safe and valuable organic based fertiliser. The solution delivered by the Vermitech System provides municipalities with a total solutions package, and fits perfectly with as one of suite of management and beneficial reuse options.

Vermitech is a world leader in the commercial application of this technology on biosolids (human sewage) and is uniquely positioned to take advantage of rapid growth in demand for recycling.

Having commercialised the technology in Australia, Vermitech is now expanding its rollout into key international markets, and is offering technology use backed by complete sales and marketing support to Water Managers looking to adopt a portfolio of reuse options in their approach to processing organic waste fractions.

Advanced Organic Waste Recycling

The Organic Waste Management Industry is undergoing an important transformation as regulators worldwide respond to social pressures to protect public health and safeguard the environment for future generations. Moral and legal imperatives, and financial incentives continue to drive waste producers towards changing their processing practices – away from disposal (e.g. landfill), and towards beneficial reuse alternatives (e.g. the Vermitech Solution)

Vermitech is currently undergoing a controlled growth phase which includes exporting our Technology, fine tuning our support networks, further adopting rigorous Quality Assurance programs and cultivating international markets for our Systems.

Focus on Biosolids

Biosolids are the by-product of sewage treatment. Representing only a fraction of the total organic waste produced, they are however, the most highly regulated of organic wastes. Although vermiculture can be adapted to treat a variety of organic wastes, Vermitech has chosen to focus on sewage biosolids. The company has more than 6 years experience in the treatment and recycling of biosolids.

The System

"The Vermitech System" is a unique integration of modern engineering, scientific and management practices with natural processes - to create a highly efficient, cost effective and flexible solution - so flexible in fact that the United Nations has designated the Vermitech System as an "ecologically sound technology".

As a knowledge based organisation, our approach to R & D has established us as the global leader in vermicultural waste management. Continued research extends our lead, reduces our capital and operating costs, and scientifically validates the value of BioVerm™

Vermitech has experience to draw upon, having processed more than 50,000 tonnes . We have a real vision for not only the logical - but the ecological place - our Systems can play in the move towards beneficial reuse policies springing forth around the world.

Are there any Vermitech Systems in the USA ?

GRANVILLE ~ PENNSYLVANIA

In July 2004, Vermitech commissioned a facility for the township of Granville, Pennsylvania. This facility, which will treat biosolids from the Township's wastewater plant, accepts aerobic digested biosolids and converts them into compost. Faced with the closure of the local landfill site, in 2002 the Township conducted a study to find the best solution for their current and future biosolids management needs.

Granville selected the Vermitech System from a range of other biosolids recycling technologies including composting, lime treatment and direct land spreading.

The Vermitech System offers Granville:

  • cost effective treatment compared to alternatives
  • the prospect of being able to sell the valued end-product to help offset the costs
  • an attractive, sustainable technology solution with minimal environment impact

The project has been supported by grants from Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection 'Growing Greener' program. This program supported a number of innovative technologies for environmental protection and improvement.

WEST HANOVER TOWNSHIP ~ PENNSYLVANIA

In mid 2008, a second facility, in West Hanover Township, Pennsylvania was opened. This facility will process up to 120 dry tons of biosolids per year.
